Sprouts
For my senior capstone project, I decided to pivot from games and join an animated student film project for the school year. You may be wondering why a Video Game Development and Design major wouldn't work on a video game for their senior capstone. I chose to pivot for a few reasons:
-
I want to be a producer!
-
I could be working with animators.
-
I wanted to observe how other people manage artists and learn from that.
-
I have a passion for animation, and the premise of this short film really resonated with me.
So, what is the best way to understand how animation happens? By joining a project full of animators as a team member. I wanted to learn the pipeline and what it's like to work on a more intensive project with milestones and multiple teams. I aimed to understand what works, what doesn't, and what could be improved upon.

So, What Did I Do?
I contributed as both a character artist and a concept artist for the environment team. My work included designing background characters and creating cameo appearances of team members throughout the film. Additionally, I sketched several prop designs that would be integrated into the final production.
During the primary animation phase, I had considerable downtime, so I took the opportunity to assist with class assignments whenever possible. To help keep our team organized and on track, I also recruited a project manager from Purdue's Project Management program. Their role was instrumental in maintaining structure and serving as an HR figure for the team.
